According to britannica.com, December 25, also known as Christmas Day, which used to be known as the Christianizing of the “dies solis invicti nati,” or in English “Day of the birth of the unconquered sun.” This popular holiday originated in the Roman Empire and celebrated the winter solstice as a revival of the sun and the casting away of the winter season indicating the return of spring and summer. The name Christmas is a fairly new word that English speakers started using in England in 1038. The name Christmas comes from the combined words Christ and mas according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. The word Christ originates from the Greek word “Christos” which originates from the Hebrew definition of “Messiah”.
Using northwalesfire.gov I have found that we celebrate Christmas to remind ourselves of the birth of Christ, which most Christians believe to be the son of God. Christmas time is mostly used as a time of spiritual reflection on the important foundations of Christianity. Over time the reason we celebrate Christmas has changed, nowadays the reason we celebrate Christmas is family. Christmas time isn’t just about the presents you get or the candy you have, it’s about the time you have with your family. For instance, my family gets together every year and we all watch a movie. We get together and we pick a random movie and we spend that time together because we are all very busy, and we take this time to see how everyone has been doing, and what all events are going on in everyone’s life. It’s easy to say that over time, the meaning of Christmas has changed, but I can say for certain that one thing that hasn’t changed is that Christmas time will always be about family.
