Most people love the traditions of Halloween but don’t know where they come from. The tradition originally came from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. The tradition of trick or treating dates back to the 16th century along with people dressing up. Although the trick or treating started centuries ago, it did not become popular until the 1920s in America.
While there are many traditions we still do, there are a few interesting ones that got lost over the years. One of those is telling fortunes with cabbage. Believe it or not, there is an old Scottish fortune-telling game where young girls would use cabbage stumps to predict information about their future husbands. They would put the stumps under their pillow on Halloween to induce dreams about their spouses.
In the past, Halloween has been used to celebrate death in many different ways. However, the modern way of celebrating, including dressing up and trick or treating, has become an acceptable event. Halloween was originally a frightening holiday, but as time has gone on, people have found good in the holiday. It is a fun holiday that can bring people together. Dress up, go out and get some candy, or stay inside watching scary movies; whatever you do, just have a fun night!
